Video assignment

 Journal
The video that I am creating is going to be an instructional video for the sport of wrestling. I thought that this could be used as a resource for coaches and athletes who maybe new to the sport. I am proud of the content of this video because it is a teaching tool and was successfully used as the first practice plan of the wrestling season.

The first part of my process was to story board out my ideas. I came up with two different ideas as to what i wanted to present. One was a high flying double leg take down and the other was a basic skill of wrestling stance. I decided to do the wrestling stance concept and created a story board with a structure that a coach could use as a first practice.

Shooting:
Filming was done on two occasions. The first day I had a colleague film using two cameras. I had one camera on a tripod and one as a handhold. It was handy having the story board, we shot six shoulder shots in role that will be placed at different parts of the video. We used the tripod camera to shot a front shot of each instruction and at the same time used the handheld to take multi angled shots of the same scene.

The second day I shot film of the drills, and activity within an actual practice. My practice plan followed my concept of the best practice to teach this wrestling skill. I made a point to explain the video to my students, and ask permission for recording of them. The video was shot using a handheld camera of the team performing drills and an combat game. The students seemed to enjoy the experience.

Over the two days of shooting I uploaded 46 clips to use in my video

Using the Shot Cut software is a learning curve. It has great features that allow you to do many applications and view properties. I have used basic apple movie maker and find that it is easy to use but doesn't allow the access to the depth of each video clip. Shot Cut has similarities that I found comforting but I found some difficulties in some simple features. Transitions were awkward to include consistently. Adding text was a feature that I think should be made easier. I used Gimp to create a starting title and ending credit.

Text and Title made using Gimp.

I did like the ability of working on multiple tracks for the same project. It allowed me to add a greater variety of camera angles to my video. I used these video clips to show a different detail and allowed a voice over instruction at the same time.

I added a music track from Bensound. I used audacity to compress and normalize the track before adding it to the video. I added a voice over to make it unique to wrestling.

Self Assessment:
Cinematography 24%
Pre-Production 15%
Programs 15%
Final Product 22%
Overall Quality 13%

  1. Great work! I was going to use GIMP too, but I had a lot of trouble with the program so I used the text in the program. Awesome showing all the work you put in.

  2. This video has a lot of helpful information. I could definitely use this to help me create a Phys. Ed. lesson for one of my classes!

    1. Thanks, I'd like to collect or make resources for teachers feel confident that they could start a club or teach a wrestling unit.
