Instructional Design can give the presenter a frame work to create but also repeat with efficiently. The suggested designs, ADDIE Model, Gagne's Events and Keller's Arc gives us a structure that assists the presenter and focuses on the audience. These designs have similarities and differences but have an important place in educational instruction.

The ADDIE design uses reflection to improve and present instruction. This model reminds me of commuting to and from work. The time alone to think and reflect provides an opportunity for analyzing how things went and what can be changed for improvement. Often as educators we are spent when it comes to this. We provide feedback to students continually and we may miss the opportunity to provide ourselves that reflection and feedback. I have recently presented a couple break out sessions for teachers and this model is similar to the thoughts and planning process that went into these presentations. If I were to continue to present the same session I'd like to use the model.

Gagne's Event design reminds me of the way we are encouraged to create unit and lesson plans. It takes us the through the detailed steps of creating an effective lesson. I may not teach each lesson in the nine event steps but there are aspects of this design in each one. Gagne's Events ingrains effective practice for planning instruction.

The Keller ARC model has a mantra feel to it. This is a model that I could hang above the desk to glance up at when stretching in the day planner. It simply focusses the direction to the learner in a positive helpful manner. It supports us to be actively engaged and consistent.

Instructional designs are important because teaching has so many moving parts. It can be a bit like scrabble fitting all the pieces together to score the big word. Using a variety instructional design models can give teachers strategies to grab onto and see if its a good fit.

  1. I like that you went into detail about each model. Helps to see another person's description of the models in there own words. I totally agree with using a variety of models to see which best fits you and/or the topic you are working with.

  3. I really like your idea about teaching as kind of being a puzzle, having to grab different strategies to try and piece things together to make one masterpiece. Using several ID methods can help teachers create their end product. I like how you create the idea of the a puzzle in your post! Thanks.

    1. I really wanted to pick yours apart Cal, but I can't. After working in Big River and commuting everyday, I feel as though I strengthened as a teacher. The long drive really allowed me to decompress from the stresses of work while reflecting on the days events. Once I got home, I always wrote down in my day planner how I could have improved a lesson or in a situation, thus improving my instruction for the future. Professional growth. Booya.
